Ours has the supercharged 5.4-liter V8 that was factory rated at 493 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque. The SOHC SMPI intercooled AMG 24-valve V8 engine in the Benz is strong, smooth and quiet. Acceleration performance is rapid for a 4000-pound car with almost 500 horsepower.
It looks totally stock in the clean engine compartment with its supercharger cradled by the aluminum colored engine cover, factory performance exhaust, fuel injection, power steering, power disc brakes, and air conditioning.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a five-speed automatic transmission with AMG SpeedShift as it rides on 5-spoke alloy factory AMG wheels and black sidewall performance tires.
Interior
The interior design of the Mercedes-Benz features a two-tone cabin in AMG Berry Red leather on the seating surfaces and lower dashboard with contrasting black leather covering the upper dashboard and door panels.
It has multicontour seats with massage, dual-zone automatic climate control, a Bose sound system, cruise control, and COMAND infotainment with navigation.
The multifunction steering wheel frames a 200-mph speedometer, an AMG-branded 7000 rpm tachometer, and gauges for coolant temperature and fuel level.
Exterior
The SL55 AMG featured deeper front and rear valances and sill extensions when compared with the standard R230, and this example is finished in Iridium Silver Metallic. Equipment includes bi-xenon headlights with heated washers, quad exhaust outlets, and auto-dimming side-view mirrors with integrated signal lighting.
Slide into the cockpit, belt up, press the button on the console and, 16 seconds later, its retractable power roof changes it from the open-air fun of a convertible to the quiet comfort of a luxury coupe.
