1957 Pontiac Star Chief Convertible NASCAR Tri-power Engine

Why This Car Is Special

Pontiac Star only made the Star Chief model four production years. Its stand-out feature was the Star Flight styling theme, which gave it those chrome-laced missile shapes down the sides.

The last model year, 1957, saw the introduction of the Tri-Power Pontiac V8 engines with the displacement growing 347 cubic inches and as a result the power made a considerable increase to 290 horsepower.

But the 1957 Pontiac Star Chief Convertible we have here at Skyway Classics has the NASCAR-certified option of the Tri-Power, which added three Rochester carburetors and a giant air cleaner, raising total power to 317 horsepower.

Our Star Chief has had a high-dollar restoration of the entire car including that engine as well as the original suspension and Strato-Flight Hydra-matic 4-speed automatic transmission.

Mechanical

The 1957 Pontiac Star Chief came in a convertible and it was also powerful for the money with the optional 347 Tri-Power engine that made it one of the fastest cars around. NASCAR had forbid Pontiac to use its newly developed Fuel Injection in race cars so Pontiac developed the NASCAR-certified option of the 347 cubic inch engine that ours has with a Tri-Power with the original numbers matching carbs (see pictures), which added three Rochester carburetors and a giant air cleaner, raising total power to 317 horsepower.

Our Star Chief has had a high-dollar restoration of the entire car including that engine and it looks just as it did back then with the original engine matching numbers, Pontiac blue painted block and valve covers, that carb set-up, the very rare black painted air cleaner setup, correct generator, radiator and fan, shroud, as well as the original suspension and Strato-Flight Hydra-matic 4-speed automatic transmission.

Interior

The beautiful restored gorgeous red/crème bench seat interior has the matching door panels, red carpet, factory steering wheel, red painted dash, engine turned dash with the factory gauges and controls, pushbutton radio, and with the rest of the interior looking as it did when it was new in 1957.

The preservation level of interior is super nice to look highly original but also exceptionally presented. The red/crème package retains all the elements that is all part of that great time capsule feeling.

Exterior

The Star Chief was the Pontiac’s premier model the 1957 model saw Pontiacs grow in length, with a substantial restyle and advertisements touted the Star Chief’s “man-sized comfort” and “barrel-chested Strato-Streak V-8,” which neatly captured the car’s appeal.

This superbly restored Star Chief convertible features beautiful white paint with the Star Flight styling theme which gave it those chrome-laced missile shapes down the sides, the bright white convertible top, large shiny chrome bumpers, spinner hubcaps, white sidewall tires, tinted glass that all makes this a very nice vintage Pontiac convertible.

Conclusion

This 1957 Pontiac Star Chief Convertible NASCAR Tri-power Engine we have here at Skyway Classics, is a restored and drop-dead looking rare highly collectible car.

Performance was great for its day and still holds up well in modern traffic, and ownership of this very rare collectable Pontiac will make it the showpiece of your collection.
