1984 Buick Grand National
Why This Car Is Special
In 1984 Buick and GM made a revolutionary Turbocharged V6 Grand National. This 3.8 Liter innovative engine was turbocharged and put out over 200 horsepower and a massive 300 lb. ft of torque.
This torque monster could rocket the 3500-pound GN to 60 miles per hour in less than 6 seconds and on to finish a 1/4 mile in about 14 seconds.
We have this 1984 Buick Grand National that is finished from the factory in a sinister gloss black exterior paint with a grey and black two-tone interior here for sale at Skyway Classics, and it is also very rare as production was limited to only 2,000 examples in 1984.

The Turbo V6 produced 200 horsepower and 300 lbs-ft of torque. Those numbers may not seem that impressive today but in 1984 these were very good numbers. The 305 cubic inch small block used in the 1984 Camaro Z28 produced 190 horsepower and 240 lbs-ft of torque and the 350 cubic inch small block used in the 1984 Corvette produced 205 horsepower and 290 lbs-ft of torque.
The interior was also dressed up to complete the package. The Grand National has a sports steering wheel, upgraded instrument package with a tachometer, boost gauge on the dash, twin bucket seats were standard and were covered with gray cloth and charcoal leather inserts, and each seat was further graced with an embroidered stylized “6” to represent the turbo V6 under the hood.
There’s plenty of comfort with factory features like the power driver’s seat, power windows, power locks, and cruise control, factory radio, center console, air conditioning, power steering, chrome automatic shifter, and matching rear seat.
The Grand Nationals are cherished classics because they really took Buick over to the dark side and ours retains that factory sinister look.
It has the great black paint, the blacked-out trim, bulging hood, full-width ducktail spoiler, black painted bumpers, “Grand National” fender badges, and it rolls on the factory black/alloy mag wheels and black sidewall tires.
The 1984 Grand National was more than a powerful engine stuffed in a mid-sized frame it was an attitude. No one was going to mistake this car for anything other than what it was. This was not a sleeper.
The 1984 Buick Grand National, like what we have here for sale at Skyway Classics, served two purposes. It showcased Buick’s new turbo charged 3.8 liter V6 engine and second it brought performance minded and youthful buyers into the Buick showrooms.
