1967 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia

Why It Is Special

The Volkswagen Karmann Ghia was a sports car marketed in a 2+2 convertible from 1957 to 1974 body and internally designated the Type 14. The Karmann Ghia combined the chassis and mechanicals of the Type 1 (Beetle) with styling by Italy's Carrozzeria Ghia and hand-built bodywork by German coachbuilding house Karmann.

We have a mint condition, restored and modified, 1967 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia here at Skyway Classics, that is the best we have ever seen with a 1776 cc SCAT performance engine and is fully restored, with receipts and bills of the restoration and engine with no expense spared.

Mechanical Specs

Ours has a 1776 cc performance built SCAT engine with 95 horsepower and 1265 ft-lbs of torque, with a performance cam, 8.5 to 1 compression pistons, Pro Street heads, 40x35.5mm valves, counterweighted crank with 8 pins, 1.25 rockers, electric distributor, chrome, I-beam connecting rods with ARP bolts, light-weight flywheel, SCAT racing lifters, steel pushrods, 60 amp alternator, a P40 35mm dual carb kit, SCAT aluminum crank, and Stage 1 Kennedy pressure plate.

It and the engine compartment it sits in looks better and sportier as it did when it was new. It runs, shifts, and drives perfectly and the sound is instantly recognizable as a high-horsepower VW.

Performance was good in the lightweight Karmann-Ghia, but now with that SCAT engine it is unbelievable with that 4-speed transmission that shifts as well as a VW can.

Interior

The completely restored interior has its twin bucket seats and rear seats as the matching pocketed door panels and looks great. The Ghia designers also did a great job disguising the Beetle's interior appointments, and the seats are really the focal point of the car. It has the classy looking wood dash featuring a big, round speedometer and other gauges.

It has the stock appearing radio, sporty 4-speed shifter, heater/defrost unit, and seatbelts. The rear seat was finished to the same level, and folds down to add some storage space, while the front opens up for plenty of luggage space.

Everything has been replaced and restored inside and looks as good as the outside with attention to everything including the floor mats, the grab handle on the dash, a drink holder/storage bin on the floor, and the factory glove box.

Exterior

The bottom line is that the Karmann-Ghia looks has over $20k in body and paint work but it looks like a million bucks in the red paint that is on it and its graceful lines, the curved fenders, and all the rest of the sheet metal.

It has like new shiny chrome bumpers front and rear, all the unique trim pieces, the black convertible top, the factory painted wheels with the correct chrome hubcaps wearing black sidewall tires, all making this a car that still draws appreciative stares wherever it goes.
