1970 Red Chevrolet SS 396 El Camino

What Makes This Car Special

Chevrolet El Camino is a coupe utility vehicle that was produced by Chevrolet between 1959–1960 and 1964–1987. Unlike a pickup truck, the El Camino was adapted from a two-door station wagon platform that integrated the cab and cargo bed into the body while production resumed for the 1964–1977 model years based on the Chevelle platform.

Most collectors think the 1970 El Camino, like the one we have here at Skyway Classics, is the most desirable body style of all. It received sheet metal revisions back then that gave the bodies a more squared-up stance and the interiors were also redesigned.

This 1970 Chevrolet El Camino has been restored and was an original SS 396 with the big block powerplant, bright white paint with black stripes, and plenty of Super Sport attitude.

Mechanical

When you lift the hood on our El Camino you will find a built 396 cubic-inch monster big block Chevy V8 engine packing a 350 horsepower that it was advertised with in 1970. The engine looks amazing, just like it did when it left the factory back then, sitting inside the sharp painted and detailed engine compartment.

The 396 motor has the four-barrel carburetor on top of the factory cast iron intake, factory cast iron exhaust headers leading back to the dual exhaust system with turbo type mufflers and side exits, black spark plug wires, black cowl induction open air cleaner system with the 396 Turbo-Jet decals correctly in place, chrome Chevrolet valve covers, and power steering and brakes.

The column mounted automatic transmission shifts smoothly and if you look at the undercarriage photos, you'll see that the engine and tranny sends the power back to a 12-bolt rear end with heavy duty shocks and springs.

It also has the right stance with the factory 5-spoke mag wheels all around with fat BF Goodrich TA Radial white-letter performance tires on all four wheels.

Interior

The El Camino came with 770 color code of Antique Medium Saddle bench seat with headrests and that is what it still has today. It has been refreshed and is complimented by matching door panels, dash, SS 396 floor mats and carpeting, factory AM/FM stereo system, black SS steering wheel and seat belts, factory gauges that are crisp and clear and has the 5500 RPM tach in those oval clusters that all true SS 396 El Caminos had.

Exterior

The 1970 El Caminos share the same single-year front end as its Chevelle sibling, and the iconic look will always be in demand. Ours has the factory correct born with color of #10 White paint with great luster and fine body fitment.

Black stripes cover the cowl-induction hood with its hood pins, and it has the blacked-out SS grille and rear panel, new chrome bumpers and trim, and even a great shiny repaint bed.

Conclusion

The very nice 1970 Chevrolet SS 396 El Camino we have at Skyway Classics is very well done and will make the new owner a great cruiser to add to the collection.

It is a very strong runner with 396 cubic inch engine and matching drive train and looks and sounds great too.
