1966 BUICK
GRAND SPORT TRIBUTE
Sharp 1966 Black Buick Grand Sport Tribute Skylark
The Gran Sport name has been used on several high-performance cars built by Buick since 1965. In the GM brands hierarchy, Buick was surpassed in luxury and comfort appointments only by Cadillac, which did not produce performance models. As a result, the Buick GS series were the most opulently equipped GM sport models of their era, and this tribute to it really captures the GS look.
The 1965 Skylark Gran Sport was the intermediate Buick Skylark with the Gran Sport option added. Although a 300 in V8 was already offered in the Skylark, the Gran Sport had the largest engine permitted by GM - a 400 cu in Buick V8. That engine was actually 401 cu in, but called a "400" by Buick because that was the maximum engine size limit set by General Motors for the intermediate body cars.
This Skylark Gran Sport Tribute has a 340 cubic inch Buick engine in it #1374557m, engine instead of the stock 300 cubic inch engine it came with. Under the hood you will find a redone 340 engine in the correct shade of Buick red, high performance electronics, redone power steering and power brakes, custom air cleaner on newer carb, factory exhaust manifolds, and a detailed engine compartment.
Buick sold more than 15,000 Skylarks with the Gran Sport option that first year, and almost as many the next. The name Gran Sport replaced the GS moniker with the 1973 Gran Sport, and was again revived in the late eighties on the FWD Skylark model with various performance options added.
The 1966 Buick Skylark we have at Skyway Classics was born again with features found on a Gran Sport, and serves as a tribute of those cars.
