Features
1974 Volkswagen Thing
1.8-Liter Flat-Four 1,835cc Four-Speed Manual Transaxle Chrome air cleaner Bosch performance coil New exhaust Painted and detailed engine compartment Drum brakes at all four corners Front bucket seats and a folding rear bench upholstered in black vinyl Heater Right-side grab handle Four-spoke steering wheel with a Wolfsburg crest Pumpkin Orange repaint “The Thing” side decals Black convertible soft top Fold-down windshield Fender-mounted turn signals Dual side mirrors Removable doors Dual exhaust outlets exiting through the black-painted rear bumper 14″ steel wheels with polished hubcaps Black sidewall tires
Mechanical
The powerplant in our Thing is said to have been refurbished under prior ownership with the flat-four that was modified to displace 1,835cc and installed in 2020.
It has a chrome air cleaner, Bosch performance coil, new exhaust, and looks great in the painted and detailed engine compartment.
Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle and it rides on 14″ steel wheels that feature polished hubcaps and wear black sidewall tires that are said to have been recently mounted. Stopping power is provided by drums at all four corners. The shocks, ball joints, wheel cylinders, and additional braking components were replaced during the refurbishment, according to the seller.
Interior
Just like the exterior, the interior is about rugged utility and the cabin features front bucket seats and a folding rear bench upholstered in black vinyl. Equipment includes a heater and a right-side grab handle. The floor pans were replaced during the refurbishment and it has a four-spoke steering wheel with a Wolfsburg cres, a replacement 90-mph speedometer with an inset fuel-level gauge, while the five-digit odometer shows 21k miles, approximately 2,000 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
Exterior
Our Thing was reportedly finished from the factory in Pumpkin Orange and received a repaint under previous ownership. Exterior details include “The Thing” side decals, a black convertible soft top, a fold-down windshield, fender-mounted turn signals, dual side mirrors, removable doors, and dual exhaust outlets exiting through the black-painted rear bumper.
The headlight bezels have been replaced and the windshield wipers have been removed.
The Thing was only officially imported for two years so that's why you don't see too many of them. These were originally built purely for function as the windshield folds down like a Jeep; and all four doors are removable and interchangeable.
And the overall style is just as unique as the Beetle. So everyone can't help but smile when they see a Thing.
Conclusion
It is not often you can find a 1974 Volkswagen Thing as nice as the orange beauty we have here at Skyway Classics and a great price too.
It is one of those great vehicles that attracts a lot of attention wherever you go.
Come see it today. They are great cars that are a blast to drive, get thumbs up and admiration everywhere they go, and won't break the bank at the gas pump.
