Mechanical

The SL500 has more standard equipment than just about any other two-seater in the world today. The 5.0-liter V8 engine develops 302 horsepower and has the electronically controlled, magnesium-housing 7G-Tronic 7-speed automatic transmission, the world's first, with closer ratios for quicker acceleration, instantaneous downshifting and higher fuel economy.

It all makes for an engaging drive on a twisting road, top up or down. The Active Body Control suspension, whose electronically controlled hydraulics help the coil springs maintain a level body under most circumstances.

Our SL 500 is packed with every bit of automotive technology that Mercedes has perfected over the past dozen years, and that's a lot of technology. It does everything well and has ultimate power, smoothness, and exclusivity.

The V8 engine in the SL500 is strong, smooth and quiet. Acceleration performance is rapid for a 4000-pound car with 300 horsepower as it is capable of accelerating from 0 to 60 mph in about 6.1 seconds.

The engine sits in a factory stock appearing engine compartment with all the correct as-came-with parts including the engine cover assembly and other factory parts.

Interior

Our Mercedes grey interior is beautifully put together, with a last-forever robustness in every part you touch. Much of the interior is covered in sumptuous leather, and what isn't is either high-quality carpet, embossed aluminum, or wood.

Nestling inside the dash, the screen and its surrounding buttons is all the factory gauges, stereo radio system with a CD player, cruise control, air conditioning, power steering and brakes, adjustable seats and mirrors, and a steering wheel from which everything can be controlled.

The leather-covered seats that come with the car are superbly comfortable for grand touring and are larger and more sumptuous than those in previous SL models.

Exterior

Our Mercedes SL 500 is surely one of the most beautiful cars in the world and ours is painted in the factory silver from the jutting chin of its front bumper to the four-eyed headlamps to the traditional front fender air intakes to the shoulders over the rear tires to the five-spoke alloy wheels.

The SL's so-called Vario-roof is a development of the SLK system, but, in this application, requires just 16 seconds to close. Roof down, the SL is remarkably buffet-free if the side windows and wind deflector are up and with the roof up, the cabin is as tranquil as a limo's.

The air inlets in the front fenders were inspired by the original 300SL. The narrow, wing-like chrome gills are reminiscent of the first SL Roadsters and are echoed in the hood. The four-eye headlamp pattern has the two lamps on each side melding into one another.

The result is a shape that draws many looks and compliments with the top u or down, and watching it retract is quite a treat in itself.
