1953 GMC Suburban Carryall

Why This Car Is Special

The 1953 GMC Suburban, like the one we have here at Skyway Classics is a restored custom version of Chevrolet's "Advance Design" series introduced in 1947.

It has the extremely rare “clam shell” rear door, updated drivetrain with a 283 cubic inch Chevrolet engine, Mustang 2 front suspension, and a custom interior too.

It will turn heads and elicits a lot of smiles at the cars shows and cruises, and you are sure to be the only one like it there.

Mechanical

Pop the hood and you will quickly realize that this GMC is far from stock as it rides on a much updated suspension featuring the Mustang 2 front end, a 283 cubic inch Chevrolet Jasper crate engine that was rebuilt with power pack heads, high rise aluminum intake, Holley 650 carb, aluminum twin scooped open element air cleaner, Edelbrock finned aluminum valve covers, and tube headers.

The rear end was replaced with a Chevy truck 10-bolt rear end with 3:73 gears and it is shifted with a 700R4 4-speed transmission. Helping it down the road is the aluminum radiator, 500 horse rated torque converter, chrome alternator, 30-gallon backup gas tank, and a polished aluminum V-drive with pulleys and hardware.

Interior

The interior is all custom power black twin electric bucket seats red original dash, full illumination LED gauges, black steering wheel on a tilt steering column, aftermarket radio, black carpet, black and red door panels, Dino Matt heat resistant padding from the firewall back to the back of the seats, overdrive switch on the dash, and air conditioning.

Open the rear doors and see the wood floorboards and inner fender wells that will allow to stow more luggage than you will ever need.

Exterior

It is painted in a Ford “PQ” red paint over GMC 800J light pearl paint with the inside sandblasted and coated with “Lizard Skin”epoxy.

All original badges have been powder coated in black and it still has the iconic but red painted front end, side view mirrors, running boards, and chrome bumpers.

“ Great experience. Contacted Al on car that I was interested in. I flew in and checked out car and all was well. He even fixed a few extra items that needed attention as well. He delivered car prompt and all was great. Would recommend him for any of your classic car purchases. ”
