1963 Pontiac Catalina

Why This Car Is Special

Not all of Pontiac's muscle cars were GTO's and Firebirds. The 1963 Pontiac Catalina had the most powerful standard V8 engines than any of the other brands full sized cars back in 1963.

Pontiac's 1963 Wide-Track lineup cemented the GM division's reputation as a design trendsetter. Its full-size cars' reimagined front ends shared an aggressive new look with vertically stacked headlamps capped by forward-jutting brows, and Pontiac's trademark split grille.

The budget-friendly Catalina was Pontiac's lowest-price full-size, but it could be optioned to be competitive on the roads and racetracks of America. Beneath the hood, power to back up the daring body styling was available for the asking.

There's something special about the 1963 Pontiac Catalina we have here at Skyway Classics. It has been made to look like the feared 421 Super Duty race cars of that year and may even have been a race car too as it has very low mileage showing.

Features

1963 Pontiac Catalina

Mechanical

Pop the hood and see that great powerful 389 cubic inch V8 engine in ours that has a set of Tri-Power 3-2barrel carbs on it as well as factory chrome Tri-Power open element air cleaners, air conditioning, factory chrome valve covers, and backed by an automatic transmission (originally a four-speed transmission.)

The engine compartment looks factory stock with just routine maintenance done to it. It still has the Pontiac blue painted engine block, and intake, factory cast iron exhaust manifolds, air conditioning, power steering and brakes, and all the other running gear.

It rides on black steel wheels with Pontiac dog dish hubcaps, black side wall tires, and the addition of the 421 emblems and Super Duty racing air scoop. The odometer is believed to reflect the car's actual mileage of 38k, and so that would mean averaging less than 645 miles annually. This small amount of mileage leads us to believe it may have had a drag racing past.

Interior

The beautiful all-business interior is filled with the basics, from the radio-delete plate on the dash to the multi-colored vinyl bench seat and matching rear seat. A tachometer has been added as well as seat belts with the rest of the interior looking as it did when it was new in 1963.

The preservation level of interior is nice as it is believed to be highly original, but also exceptionally presented. The blue/white package retains a deep color with blue door panels and carpet, great dash, the factory steering wheel that fits the color theme and has that translucent element that is all part of that great time capsule feeling.

The sales come complete with owner's manual, warranty cards, and PHS Documentation too.

Exterior

The Cameo Ivory (white) paint shows well and was what it was painted from the factory according to the 1963 correct colors and draws attention to its straight sheet metal, Super Duty hood scoop, and doors that close with authority.

It has nice bodywork with full-length trim and the quality of the chrome really highlights well. The 421 emblems and race car looks give it a real sinister classic style.

Conclusion

This 1963 Pontiac Catalina we have here at Skyway Classics has a lot of originality with classic race car looks that is a very rare collectable that PHS documentation shows to be an original 389 car with a four-speed from the factory.

This full-sized Pontiac that is dressed to look like a 421 SD Pontiac is a mixture of big chrome, intricate bodywork, and an imposing stance made them a force to be reckoned with on the street and drag strip.
