1968 Pontiac GTO Convertible

Why This Car Is Special

The original Pontiac GTO is an automobile that was built by Pontiac from 1964 to 1974 model years.

The first generation GTO was a muscle car of the 1960s and 1970s era. Although there were earlier muscle cars, the Pontiac GTO is considered by some to have started the trend with all four domestic automakers offering a variety of competing models. This is a true 1968 GTO Convertible we have here at Skyway Classics verified by its 242 VIN code, with a 400 cubic inch engine and Hurst shifted automatic transmission.

It is a rare GTO because only 9,980 convertible GTO's were produced in 1968 out of 87,684 total production. The car is very original and rides down the road, just like it did in 1968.

Mechanical

The engine is a 400 cubic inch painted correctly in the Pontiac blue like it was from the factory. It looks factory stock with all the correct parts like the intake, factory cast iron exhaust manifolds, wiring and hoses and an aftermarket chrome open element air cleaner, and sits in the complete and detailed engine compartment.

Hot Rod tested a 1968 GTO equipped with the standard engine and obtained a quarter mile reading of 14.7 seconds at 97 mph in pure stock form.

This GTO Convertible is loaded with options such as the Enduro Bumper, Hideaway headlights, Power steering, Power disc brakes, Hurst His/Hers Dual Gate shifter, Hood tachometer, and rides on the factory Pontiac Rally wheels and the famous period correct Red Line Tires.

Interior

Our GTO has a beautiful black bucket seat interior with matching black carpets and rear seat, door panels, and trim, Pontiac wooden steering wheel, the GTO dash with all the factory gauges as well as some accessory gauges down low, floor mats, and an aftermarket stereo radio system, and the black convertible top works well.

Exterior

Our GTO is painted in a great slick white paint flowing over the General Motors redesigned A-body lines for 1968 and has a more curvaceous, semi-fastback styling than earlier years.

Pontiac abandoned the familiar vertically stacked headlights in favor of a horizontal layout, but made hidden headlights available at extra cost which ours has.

The concealed headlights were a popular option. It has the signature hood scoops on either side of a prominent hood bulge extending rearward from the protruding nose.

A unique feature on our GTO was the body-color Endura front bumper. It was designed to absorb impact without permanent deformation at low speeds. Pontiac touted this feature heavily in advertising, showing hammering at the bumper to no discernible effect.

Concealed windshield wipers, which presented a cleaner appearance hidden below the rear edge of the hood, were standard on this GTO and another popular option it has is the hood-mounted tachometer, located in front of the windshield and lit for visibility at night.

Conclusion

You just don't find many GTO's like this 1968 GTO Convertible we have at Skyway Classics.

It runs and drives fantastic. The 1968 GTO won the Motor Trend Car of the Year Award and this one can be your car of the year for many years to come too.
