1974 DeTomaso Pantera GTS

Why This Car Is Special

Skyway Classics has a recently no-dollar-spared extensive restoration of a 1974 DeTomaso Pantera GTS (real GTS with GT in the Vin number) here for sale. When is the last time you have seen one of these rare Supercars for sale anywhere?

Alejandro De Tomaso, who produced the Mangusta Coupé, commissioned Lamborghini designer Gianpaolo Dallara to produce the chassis for a Ford Motor Company project, the mid-engine supercar by the name of Pantera.

Ford Motor Company became DeTomaso's partner for the introduction of this car series in 1971. Like the earlier Mangusta, the Pantera relied on a Ford V8 power plant backed by a ZF 5-speed transaxle.

Pantera was distributed through select Lincoln-Mercury dealerships in the USA until 1974 when Ford and DeTomaso decided to part ways. For the 1974 model year Ford offered 138 US spec GTS to the market (98 to the 49 states and 40 re-documented as 1973 models for California.)

Before we go any farther, this whole restored Pantera is like no other restoration you may have ever see. It is a masterpiece beyond description and no pictures will really do it justice. Over $250K has been spent to complete it as well as $30K to build the NASCAR Spec engine that resides in it, and MUST be seen in person to be believed. The stock engine is on a stand in the owner's garage and goes with the sale as well as the original deep factory wheels.

This Hatfield Restoration has even won the Concourso Italiana Car Show in Monterey California and we can give you the phone number to call to find out all that was done in that process.

Mechanical

This 1974 DeTomaso Pantera GTS is just one of just 97 produced for the U.S.-market and has just a tad over 35,500 original miles on the odometer. The stock 351 cubic inch engine that was originally in this Pantera was a Cleveland Ford V8 that produced 266 horsepower and 301 lb-ft of torque with single 4-barrel carburetor, and it has been rebuilt and is on a stand in mint show condition and will go with the sale of this car.

That engine is being sold with the car but in its place is a 351 Cleveland engine modified to NASCAR specs yielding more than 500 horses and gobs of torque. Everything is in spotless condition from the chrome air cleaner, performance Holley carb, finned valve covers, aluminum intake, and on down to the immaculate ZF 5-speed manual, this supercar is better looking and more powerful than new.

Independent unequal length A-arm suspension with front and rear anti-sway bars works with rack-and-pinion steering for supercar-level road control on this suspension which has been polished and super detailed too.

The Pantera GTS rolls on fat super wide radial performance tires mounted on wider than stock front and rear custom wheels, with the stock ones going with the sale also.

Interior

Our exotic Pantera offers an interior just as worthy of praise as does the engine and exterior. It consists of twin front bucket seats with aromatic and supple leather upholstery. The largely hand-made dash is angular and has large clusters of Veglia gauges front and center with auxiliary gauges on the center stack cleverly angled towards the driver.

A/C was standard and has been recently and extensively upgraded so it's actually effective today, and the shifter for the 5-speed gearbox looks vaguely Ferrari-like with its polished gate.

Electric windows add luxury to the '70s-perfect interior, and a 200 MPH speedometer and 8,000 RPM tachometer are ready to gauge 6-second 0-60 MPH launches and the Pantera's over 175 MPH top speed.

This rare supercar can literally be driven every day in comfort without issues with even plenty of luggage room in the front cavity for a briefcase or a weekend's worth of luggage.

Exterior

This American-market Pantera GTS has a super paint job that shines as the paint just flows over the sleek body with a blacked-out hood and deck lid, black anodized trim, special exhaust tips, fender flares, and rocker-panel graphics.

This low mileage Pantera GTS comes with its original owner's manual and books, Ownercard, and miscellaneous records. With it's drop-dead looks, blistering performance and extreme rarity, this Pantera GTS has it

As stated earlier, this Pantera was extensively restored and is quite likely the fastest car 70's car you'll ever own and it is a car that looks like a million bucks. If you can't get noticed in this car, you may as well stay home.

Conclusion

The 1974 DeTomaso Pantera we have here at Skyway Classics is an iconic Italian-American Supercar that delivers jaw-dropping performance, had the top-notch restoration, and the exotic looks that will make it a celebrity everywhere it goes.
